UEFA last night banned Real Madrid striker Raul for one match and handed him a £7,600 fine following his "handball" goal against Leeds, branding his actions "a manifest act of cheating".

The Spanish international will miss Real's Champions League match against Anderlecht on Wednesday, but will be available for his club's quarterfinal match.

Raul thumped the ball past Leeds goalkeeper Nigel Martyn for Real's first goal in the 3-2 win which ensured the current European champions finished top of the group.

Match referee Riszard Woljic apologised to Leeds players in the dressing-room after the match, having been made aware at half-time that the goal was scored with the player's hand.

Raul's absence will not affect Real's standing at the top of Group B. They were assured of top spot with the Leeds win, and the Elland Road side had already secured their quarter-final qualification prior to their trip to the Bernabeu.

But the goal could be seen as having been decisive, coming as it did just a minute after Alan Smith's opener for Leeds.

Raul went on to score a second, although were his actions spotted by Woljic he could have been dismissed, prompting last night's announcement, with UEFA adding: "Such an act, which apart from the negative consequences for the opposing team, goes against the principles of Fair Play and cannot remain unpunished."

Raul will wait to speak with Real officials before deciding whether to go ahead with an appeal.

UEFA decided not to punish Luis Figo for allegedly earning a yellow card on purpose during the match.

Raul claimed, on his personal website, that the Portuguese winger and Claude Makalele set out to pick up bookings which would count them out of the Anderlecht games but ensure they began the quarter-finals with clean slates.
