Former GAA president Peter Quinn is to chair the association's new an McCague , the president of the GAA, has announced the composition of his Strategic Review Committee. The establishment of this committee was one of the highest priorities for new president Sean McCague on taking office.

McCague's predecessor, Joe McDonagh, will also sit on the committee.

Although McCague is reluctant to make the comparison, the review is plainly based on that undertaken by the GAA Commission of 1969, chaired by another former president, Padraig McNamee, whose report set out the course for the association over the last 30 years.

The new committee had its first meeting last Saturday. The terms of reference will be to:

Review the role and function of the GAA and recommend direction, policies and functions for the future.

Review and report on existing governance, management, operating and administrative structures.

Recommend a structure to optimise the efficiency and effectiveness of the GAA in respect of the promotion and development of the aims and objectives of the association.

Among the issues to be addressed are: the GAA's role in Ireland and an increasingly urban society; the special needs of Dublin; responsibility to overseas members; role of clubs; membership; responsibility in relation to the Irish language; strategic implications of the redevelopment of Croke Park; management and development of facilities; utilising assets and resources of the association; players' issues; competitive structures; coaching and games development; amateur status; discipline; existing structures; function and composition of the Management Committee; roles and responsibilities of the president, director general and county boards; role of central council and provincial councils; definition of executive functions and responsibilities; management information; mix of staff with relevant skills and qualifications; IT infrastructure.

Two of the members, Martin Rafferty and Gerry Cloherty, were members of the McNamee Commission.

Clare club Bodyke will officially open their club grounds at Tuamgreaney this Saturday, May 20th, with a senior hurling challenge between the county and new league winners Galway. Fr McNamara, chairman of the county board, will open the grounds at 6.30 with the hurling match to throw in at 7.0.
