Quarter-finals:

Time for the big names to make their exits

Time for the big names to make their exits. Argentina, Germany and Italy, eight world titles between them, all packed their bags and headed for home with little to complain about. Having earned a second major championship finals crack at Germany, the Croatians this time handled themselves perfectly, playing to their strengths and exploiting the weaknesses of their opponents.

Ariel Ortega was sent off as his side was beaten by Holland. Kluivert and Bergkamp picked up a goal each, Bergkamp's a wonderful effort in which he trapped a long ball, pulled it back beyond Ayala's reach and then slotted past Roa. There was less than two minutes left.

At the Stade de France, meanwhile, Italy found themselves needing to win a penalty shoot-out to keep their hopes alive. Di Biagio was the one to miss this time. The hosts were through. In the fourth game, Denmark produced a spirited display before losing 3-2 to Brazil.

Bergkamp's wonder goal against Argentina.
