Arsene Wenger added further spice to next month's FA Cup semi-final between Arsenal and Tottenham by admitting yesterday that he was interested in bringing Sol Campbell to Highbury in the summer.
Campbell's contract at White Hart Lane expires at the end of the season, allowing him to leave on a free transfer under the Bosman ruling, and Wenger sees the 26-year-old as a figure around whom he could rebuild his defence.
"I personally believe Sol Campbell, if he was free, would interest the 20 clubs in the Premier League - I hope minus one in Tottenham," Wenger said. "Sol Campbell is a great player but he has said he will stay at Tottenham, so what can I do?"
Campbell has indicated he would be happy to stay at Spurs and is due to hold talks with the new owners. Wenger cannot approach him until the end of the season, even though Campbell has been free to talk to foreign clubs since January 1st, but he will hope to lure him with the offer of Champions League football.
For the time being Wenger's thoughts are on Bayern. Arsenal must win to be sure of reaching the next round (a draw would suffice for Bayern) and failure to pick up three points will send them out if Lyon beat a Spartak Moscow side already eliminated.
With Bayern undefeated at home in five Champions League games during which they have conceded only one goal, Arsenal face a tough task. Their topsy-turvy European campaign was encapsulated by a failure to hold a 2-0 lead against Bayern in December, but Wenger sounds confident.
"It's a high-pressure game and I'm confident my players can cope with that," he said. "When it has mattered we have lost only one game in Europe since the beginning of the season, in Moscow. We have to try to take the game to them and try to score goals and win."
Nwankwo Kanu is favourite over Sylvain Wiltord to partner Thierry Henry up front.
Although Bayern are top of the Bundesliga, the locals are not confident. They have been in poor form, beset by internal disputes after the 3-0 defeat at Lyon and are without their suspended captain Stefan Effenberg.
Lyon are confident of the victory they need to reach the last eight. The French revived hopes of qualification by beating Bayern 3-0 at home last week. They are currently in third position, one point behind Arsenal and three behind the Germans.
A victory for Lyon would see them reach the quarter-finals whatever the result of the match between Bayern and Arsenal.
"We always said we wanted to keep our destiny in our hands and that is the case today," said Lyon coach Jacques Santini.
"We will go to Moscow to qualify without bothering about the result of the other match in the group."
