A delightful chip between the posts by St David's out-half Brian O'Sullivan provided the highlight of this Leinster Schools' Junior Cup Section A quarter-final game at Merrion Road early in the second half, with Karl Murray outpacing the defence to touch down. Although they were three points down thanks to an Eoin Burke penalty, it took the eventual winners just seven minutes to cross the Skerries line. O'Sullivan touched down in a move which also involved Barry Holmes and the impressive Ross McKeon. O'Sullivan added the points.
St David's then moved up a gear, but they were unable to break through thanks to some superb tackling by the Skerries back row, while Graham Cullen was also prominent in both defence and attack.
The change of ends brought little relief for the Skerries defence and St David's breathed a little easier when O'Sullivan's remarkable chip enabled Murray to ease the score out to 12-3. O'Sullivan got his second try after a great break by McKeon following a ruck some 15 metres out. Skerries were galvanised by this score and moved with more conviction, with Peter Harris taking a short tap penalty from which David Early dived through the cover.
To their credit, a younger, but physically strong Skerries outfit never gave up, but the greater flair of St David's carried the day.
