GREG NORMAN shot five birdies on the back nine for a 5 under par 66 and a share of the first round lead with Nick Price in the Kemper Open in Potomac, Maryland yesterday.

Jeff Sluman, Paul Stankowski and Kelly Gibson were a stroke back at 67, and Tom Lehman and Ben Crenshaw topped a six player group at 68.

Norman's round was in marked contrast to that of Nick Faldo, who had a two over 73, including a double bogey and a bogey on the first two holes and a missed two footer for par on the 17th.

Norman attributed his revival to a recent decision to relieve himself from the day to day running of his Great White Shark course design company.

"It's done me a world of good. I go to the office maybe an hour, two hours a day if I need to, instead of eight hours."

Price had five birdies on the back nine in his bogeyfree round.

"I drove the ball super today, hitting in the middle of the fairway, which bodes well for next week," said Price, referring to next week's US Open at nearby Congressional Country Club.
