(From previous page) Referee Brian Campsall's hand cling of the line out will be very important. He will need to apply the law here more vigilantly than he did three weeks ago in the European Cup semi final between Leinster and Cardiff.

The Ireland pack carries a great responsibility, but it has the capacity to lay the foundations for victory. They will need to concentrate for 80 minutes, during which their fitness levels will be put to the test.

Eric Elwood has been entrusted with the out half berth in the belief that he can produce the varied game that Kidd requires. He must trust the talents of those outside him the centre combination of Bell and Kurt McQuilkin is one of distinct promise. Elwood will also have the place kicking duties and those, as we all know, can prove of immense importance.

This Ireland team may not as yet be the complete unit, but it is one that looks a side of considerable promise. I believe it has the depth to answer the call today and end the barren spell against Scotland.
