WBA 2 Wigan 2:OF THE various offers accepted and refused in the last frantic hours of the transfer window, one of the most important may prove to be Wigan Athletic's rejection of Newcastle's €7 million attempt to take Charles N'Zogbia back to St James' Park.
Albion’s only new face, Carlos Vela, signed on loan from Arsenal, lined up on the right wing while Wigan brought back N’Zogbia and Hugo Rodallega.
Another Wigan returnee was Republic of Ireland international James McCarthy, the 20-year-old midfielder for whom Chelsea were rumoured to be preparing a €7 million bid. While the rumour proved inaccurate, it was also a reflection of the regard in which McCarthy is held, at the DW Stadium at least.
Barely five minutes had passed when Peter Odemwingie’s speed saw him leave Steve Gohouri floundering before a single neat touch pushed the ball past Ali Ab-Habsi.
Wigan refused to panic and N’Zogbia was brought down on the edge of the penalty area. While goalkeeper Boaz Myhill might just have had the left-footed strike covered, a deflection ensured N’Zogbia’s shot was deflected beyond the former Hull player.
Then Gonzalo Jara fouled Maynor Figueroa 24 yards from goal. Ben Watson’s curling delivery was clearly designed for a glancing header, but eluded every head before ending up in the net.
Late on, Wigan’s defence finally broke again, when Thomas’s cross picked out Antoine Fortune and he headed beyond Al Habsi’s dive.
