EAMONN DARCY’S one over par final round of 73 gave him a tied 29th finish at the Belas Clube de Campo Senior Open de Portugal as Mark Mouland sealed his first European Senior Tour title with a four under par final round of 68.
Darcy finished the tournament on one over par, while Des Smyth had a day to forget as his six over par round of 78 meant he slipped down the leaderboard to finish tied for 38th on three over for the tournament.
Mouland’s steady finish, after following up his opening round of 70 with a 69, was enough to seal a one shot victory on nine under par after as many as five potential winners fell by the wayside in the challenging final stretch at Belas Clube de Campo, outside Lisbon.
In a thrilling finish, Jerry Bruner, Gary Wolstenholme, Doug Johnson and Gordon Brand Jnr all shared the lead as the final groups reached the turn.
But they all faltered on the closing holes with every one of them suffering a double bogey on the back nine, with Bruner double bogeying the 14th, Wolstenholme dropping two shots on the 17th, Johnson suffering an eight on the par four 12th while Brand Jnr found the water at the 18th on the way to a one over par round of 73.
Mouland, meanwhile, was coolness personified as he came down the stretch, birdieing the 10th, 11th, 13th and 15th.
ENGLAND’S Felicity Johnson defeated Italian Diana Luna with a par at the first play-off hole to claim the Lacoste Ladies Open de France on a glorious final day at Paris International.
It was like ground hog day for Luna, as she was defeated by Felicity’s namesake Trish Johnson in a one-hole play-off at the same venue 11 months previously.
This time, it was the 24-year-old from Halesowen near Bimingham who took the title and €37,500 prize money, earning her second Ladies European Tour victory.
