Archie Moore, who knocked out more fighters than anyone in history and who fought both Rocky Marciano and Muhammad Ali died on Wednesday. He was 84.
Moore boxed for an incredible 27 years before retiring in 1962 at the age of 49. In 229 fights, he knocked out 141 people, a record. He won the light heavyweight title in 1952 when he was 39 and held onto it for almost a decade.
Born Archibald Lee Wright in Benoit, Mississippi, he died four days short of his 85th birthday.
Moore first fought in 1936 as a middleweight, moving up to heavyweight in 1945. He slung such ferocious punches that most top contenders refused to fight him. He took the light heavyweight title in 1952. In 1955, Moore challenged Marciano for the heavyweight title, stunning the undefeated champ by knocking him down in the second round. Marciano took out Moore in the ninth round. Moore challenged Ali at the age of 49, when he was knocked out in the fourth round.
