Connacht League: Two of the best forwards in the country came face to face in this Connacht FBD League game at Dangan yesterday, but in the end it was Micheál Meehan who stole the show from Mayo's Conor Mortimer.

For a time it seemed as if Mortimer was going to be the decisive figure as he shot four superb points from play in the opening half in a game played in a constant downpour.

But Meehan, who flicked home a goal after just two minutes, took control of proceedings in the second half. He kicked six points from frees despite the conditions and also landed one from play from an acute angle.

An understrength Mayo, who trailed by 2-1 to 0-6 at the break, pulled back a goal from the hard-working Alan Dillon, but never looked like catching the students with Brendan Ó Callaráin adding a point in the closing stages to his first-half goal to seal NUIG's deserved victory.
