Arklow and Castle Barna created their own piece of golfing history over the weekend when both clubs won their first Leinster pennants. Arklow won the Junior Cup at Laytown and Bettystown while Castle Barna were successful in the Pierce Purcell Shield at St Anne's. Arklow beat Hermitage 4-1 in the quarter-final and followed with a 3-2 won over Moate, who were contesting their seventh Leinster play-offs, and in the final they beat Stackstown 3-1 with one match halved. The Arkow squad was Trevor O'Sullivan, Derek Kavanagh, Chris Doyle, Walter Gilbert, Jimmy Gilbert, Ray Murphy and Tommy Kealy, and managed by Billy Woodhouse, Johnny Groome and Mick Daly.
Meanwhile, celebration went long into the night in Daingean after Castle Barna's 3 1/2 1 1/2 win over Mount Wolseley. The Castle Barna team of Noel Guing, John Fleming, Kevin Sheridan, Michael Cahill, Hugh Meehan, Ger Meehan, Gerry Maguire, Mark Nolan, Tony McCormack and Eddie Bowes beat Beaverstown in the semi-final, while Mount Wolseley had a 4-1 win over Birr. Both teams will now go forward to represent Leinster in the All-Ireland finals at Royal Portrush from the September 16th to the 18th.
