NEWBRIDGE earned their passage to the next stage but will not derive much satisfaction from this scrappy Junior Cup second round encounter against King's Hospital at Templeville Road yesterday.

Full back Alan Lane broke the deadlock with a penalty in the first half of a match littered with countless stoppages for petty infringements and punctuated by numerous scrums.

There were few redeeming features in this stop start affair, but special mention must be given to King's Hospital second row, Robert Norton, who won some quality ball in the line out exchanges. However, his team failed to capitalise on this service, with out half Robert Willis relying too often on the kicking option.

The decisive score arrived in the 20th minute. Lane split the posts with an accurate penalty kick after King's Hospital were penalised for going offside in a ruck.
