Kewell transfer put on hold

SOCCER: Harry Kewell has risked jeopardising his £7 million move to Liverpool by demanding a pay-off in excess of £1.5 million from Leeds for the remaining year of his contract at Elland Road.

Leeds and Liverpool had hoped to confirm the 24-year-old's switch yesterday but, while personal terms on a £60,000-a-week contract and the structure of the payments between the clubs have been agreed, the haggling over the size of the compensation package has so far scuppered any chance of a resolution.

Instead, the player and Leeds remain hopeful a compromise can be reached today, with the club's intention to confirm the deal to the London Stock Exchange before the close of trading.

As Kewell did not ask for a transfer - Leeds asked the midfielder's agent Bernie Mandic to set up a £7 million deal with interested clubs - he is entitled to monies owed on the remaining 12 months of his contract, though Keeds had hoped to restrict that to the loyalties due for that period.

Kewell's stance, which was met with no little alarm by Leeds officials, appears somewhat surprising given the size of the financial package awaiting him at Anfield and the fact he has already spoken of his desire to move to Merseyside, where he will wear the number seven.

"I'm going (to Liverpool) because I believe it represents a real chance of winning the Premiership title," Kewell told the Sydney-based television station Channel Nine News yesterday. "I followed them when I was a kid and I have a lot of admiration for the club and the people in charge.

"This is what I want. Of course it is nice to hear yourself mentioned in connection with such big clubs, but this is my first choice and I cannot wait."

Meanwhile, Paris St-Germain are awaiting a formal written offer from Manchester United for Ronaldinho after the champions confirmed they are willing to up their bid from £15 million to nearer £20 million. The Parisian club are anxious to conclude the protracted transfer by tomorrow, when the Brazilian forward is due to report back for pre-season training at Aix-les-Bains.

The PSG president Francis Graille yesterday met Real Madrid counterpart Florentino Perez as well as Alex Ferguson and the player's agent, with negotiations over the fee all but agreed.

"One way or another this transfer will be sorted out this week," said Graille, who confirmed there had been a late approach from Chelsea.

PSG are satisfied with the offer relayed to them by United officials and are anxious to raise funds so their new coach Vahid Halilhodzic can add to the squad.

Ronaldinho has suggested to his brother and agent Roberto Assis he may not report for PSG's training camp if he has not sealed a move by then.
