Keating confirms his Tipperary exit

Babs Keating has confirmed that he has stepped down as manager of the Tipperary hurlers, writes Seán Moran.

There had been much speculation that he would go after the defeat by Wexford in the All-Ireland quarter-final and comments he made on RTÉ last week indicated he was on the verge of departure.

Yesterday in the Sunday Times, Keating confirmed he had communicated his decision to the county board and recommended his selector John Leahy as his successor.

"John has a great insight into every member of the panel," Keating said. "He is very well regarded by our supporters club and our sponsor and I believe he has all the necessary qualities."

This brings to an end a disappointing two years' return to management with the county for Keating, who previously led Tipperary to All-Ireland titles in 1989 and '91.

Meanwhile, Westmeath hurlers will be permitted to take part in next year's Leinster hurling championship.

Darren McCormack, captain of the Westmeath team that won the Christy Ring Cup at Croke Park yesterday, pleaded with the GAA authorities to allow his team play in next year's Leinster championship.

Leinster PRO Tom Farrell confirmed after the game that Westmeath are already scheduled to take part in the competition.This means Westmeath will be able to play in the Christy Ring Cup and the provincial championship.
