With only the first sure certain to progress, plus the six fastest losers, Derval O’Rourke will need to be on her A-game from the start: drawn in the fourth heat, in lane six, she has five women with quicker times this season alongside her, including the American Dawn Harper, and the European champion Nevin Yanit of Turkey. It won’t be easy, not by any means.

Noon: Sailing

Having had a day to regroup yesterday, Dublin sailors Ger Owens and Scott Flanigan embark on their final four races in need of a minor miracle to simply make the medal race. Languishing third from bottom in the overall standings, Owens and Flanigan will be hoping to climb the pecking order in today’s two races (noon and 1.15pm).

1pm: Sailing

Annalise Murphy goes into today’s medal race at Weymouth knowing a victory will guarantee her the gold medal. But with just one point separating the top four boats, and light winds forecast that may cause problems for the Dubliner, she could also come away empty-handed. The biggest race of Murphy’s young sailing career is on the water at 1pm.

1.30pm: Boxing

The long wait is finally over for Katie Taylor, the world number one just eight minutes away from a guaranteed medal when she takes on Britain’s Natasha Jonas in the quarter-finals of the women’s lightweight division. Jonas lost to Taylor 6-3 in Bulgaria last year but the Liverpool southpaw will have 90 per cent of the ExCel Arena behind her this afternoon.

3pm: Sailing

Matt McGovern and Ryan Seaton still have it all to do if they are to make it through to the medal race. Even if they do make the top 10, the Irish 49ers are too far down the overall standings to challenge for a medal. The duo will have their last two preliminary races this afternoon (3pm and 3.45pm).

2pm: Equestrian

Cian O’Connor goes in the third round of the show jumping competition on Blue Loy having successfully come through qualifying. Billy Twomey failed to qualify for the last 46 but is on the reserves list for today.
