A spotlight on the Irish who are in action today
12pm: Sailing
The talk of Weymouth, can Annalise Murphy continue her remarkable run of firsts in the Laser Radial Class. The next two of six remaining races take place this afternoon, with Murphy back in the boat at noon and 1.15pm.
Ryan Seaton and Matt McGovern will take great heart by finishing off yesterday with a second, a result that moves them up to sixth overall. They will need more of the same in today’s fifth (noon) and sixth (12.45pm) races if they are to challenge for medals.
Off the pace again yesterday, these Games are providing a steep learning curve for James Espey in the men’s Laser. The Olympic newcomer hasn’t placed higher than 36th in his opening four races and will be hoping for better today. Race five is at 12.05pm with the sixth race taking place at 1.20pm.
1.30pm: Canoeing
It’s D-Day for Eoin Rheinisch in the K1 kayak slalom. Having just missed out on a medal in Beijing, the Kildare paddler knows he will have to up his game from the qualifying rounds to have any chance of a medal today. The semi-finals start at 1.30pm, with the leading 10 advancing to the final at 3.15pm.
2pm: Boxing
After overcoming Dennis Ceylan in the first round, Kanat Abutalipov now stands between John Joe Nevin and a place in the quarter-finals. The Kazakhstan bantamweight was well beaten (15-2) by Nevin in the 2009 President’s Cup but should prove a more obdurate opponent on this occasion.
2.15pm: Cycling
David McCann is the only Irish rider to take part in the time trial, the 39-year-old rounding of his Olympic campaign after finishing 55th in the road race.
Starting and finishing at Hampton Court Palace, the course is 27.3 miles long (44km) on a relatively flat route around south west London.
