ROWING NEWSIRELAND HAD a remarkable set of results at the weekend, with Orla Hayes finishing fifth at the World Under-23 Championships in Germany and the home team bagging eight medals, including three golds, at the Coupe de la Jeunesse for juniors at the National Rowing Centre in Cork.

The double scull of Lisa Dilleen (Tribesmen, Galway) and Laura D'Urso (City of Derry) took gold medals on both Saturday and Sunday at the Coupe, an 11-nation European tournament. The men's double of Peter Hanily (St Michael's) and Peter Chambers (Bann) matched that feat yesterday, having taken bronze in a cracking race on Saturday.

Ireland's tally was completed by the men's coxed four, which took silver on both days, and the men's quadruple scull, which took bronze on Saturday, along with the women's eight - stroked by Dilleen - which had taken bronze on Friday night.

Hayes did the hard work in Saturday's semi-final in Brandenburg, where she took second behind Germany's Helke Neischlag to make her way into the world's top six at this level.
