Ireland's quest for a first European Boys' team championship victory will be backboned by players who have already made history.

David Jones, Robin Symes and Michael McDermott were all members of the Irish team that won the Boys' Home Internationals for the first time last year - and the trio have been included in the Irish team for next month's European Boys' championship which takes place at Gullane, East Lothian, from July 8th-12th.

Jones (City of Derry), Symes (Shandon Park) and McDermott (Stackstown) were all in the team that won the R & A Trophy at Royal North Devon golf club last August.

Jones won three and halved two of his six matches; Symes was unbeaten in six matches, while McDermott won four out of six.

The three 18-year-olds are joined in the team - which will be captained by Jimmy Greene (Grange) - by Justin Kehoe, from Birr, who is a scholarship student in UCD, 17-year-old Sean McTernan of Co Sligo, and 16year-old Mervyn Owens of Mallow. Jones, Symes and McTernan were on the Irish team that finished sixth in last year's Europeans in Slovenia.

Irish Amateur Open strokeplay champion Michael Hoey will lead a six-man youths' team that will play Wales in a representative match at Headfort next week.

Hoey (Shandon Park), recently-crowned Leinster Youths' champion Ricky Elliott (Royal Portrush), Colm Moriarty (Athlone), Alan Murray (Greystones), Tim Rice (Limerick) and Alan Thomas (Tramore) comprise the team that takes on the Welsh in the annual encounter tomorrow week.

The international will take place on the eve of the Irish Youths' Open Championship at the Kells club.
