ULSTER SCHOOLS' CUP: RBAI 10 Regent House 0ROYAL BELFAST Academical Institution qualified for the final of the Ulster Schools' Cup but it was a rather disappointing performance against Regent House at Ravenhill.
Admittedly Institution were the better team and deserved their victory but the they squandered too many scoring opportunities.
Kickable penalties were missed and twice with an overlap just a few metres out the final pass went astray.
Regent had first use of the freshening wind and Neil Armstrong was just wide with two penalty attempts. Institution had much the better of the play but stout defending combined with basic mistakes prevented them from scoring.
Just before half time Regent’s scrumhalf Alastair Lockhart was yellow-carded in front of his posts and RBAI fullback Paddy Irwin was on target from 15 metres.
The Belfast team continued to pressurise and after seven phases hooker David McGovern picked up from a ruck and ran behind the posts for Irwin to convert.
The Belfast team started the second half strongly, Irwin missed an easy penalty and following a number of five-metre scrums the line was breached but the ball was held up.
Regent kept trying to play open rugby even from their own line but were unable to reduce the arrears even when Institution had Rory McCurry yellow-carded with 10 minutes remaining.
