How leading juveniles fared

1996

Revoque (123) - Grand Criterium and Prix Salamandre winner who appeared an unlucky runner-up to Entrepreneur in the 2,000 Guineas but who flopped subsequently in the Irish Guineas. Made an successful reappearance in small race at Doncaster but flopped again in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

1995

Alhaarth (126) - Unbeaten at two including the Dewhurst Stakes. Was unplaced in the Guineas and the English and Irish Derbys. Was campaigned as four-year-old over a mile and 10 furlongs, and his best performance was when winning a Group Two on Irish Derby day.

1994

Celtic Swing (130) - Brilliant 12-length winner of the Racing Post Trophy which caused bookmakers to quote prices on him winning the Triple Crown! Ultimately disappointing, although he won the French Derby after being controversially switched from Epsom. Narrowly beaten when odds-on in the 2,000 Guineas and never ran again after disappointing in the Irish Derby.

1993

Grand Lodge (120) - One of the lowest rated juvenile champions after narrowly winning the Dewhurst Stakes. Just touched off by Mister Baileys in the 2,000 Guineas but achieved another Group One bracket when winning the St James's Palace Stakes under an inspired Mick Kinane ride.

1992

Zafonic (125) - Unbeaten triple Group One-winning juvenile champion, this giant colt was beaten in a small race on his three-year-old reappearance but then annihilated his 2,000 Guineas opposition in one of the best performances in the race in modern times. Bled on subsequent appearance and was retired.

1991

Arazi (130) - Has claims to be among the best two-year-olds ever, judged on a mind-boggling win in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Operated on for a knee injury during the winter and was never the same. A huge disappointment when only eight in the Kentucky Derby and, although subsequently a winner of the Prix Dollar, he will be remembered for what might have been.

1990

Hector Protector (126) - Impressive Francois Boutin trained two-year-old who achieved classic success in the French 2,000 Guineas. Fancied when stepped up in distance for the Epsom Derby but never got in a blow behind Generous. Subsequently became a smart miler.

1989

Machiavellian (125) - Another Boutin-Stavros Niarchos juvenile champion, he started a warm favourite for the 2,000 Guineas but couldn't live with Tirol. Machiavellian again finished behind Tirol in the Irish 2,000 Guineas and his three-year-old career petered out.

1988

High Estate (125) - Unbeaten in five runs at two including the Coventry, the Champagne, the Solario and the Royal Lodge. A big disappointment at three when he ran four times, never won, and finished his career by finishing fourth last in the Champion Stakes.
