DERRY SHC FINAL REPLAY: Kevin Lynch's 5-11 Lavey 1-7 A FIRST-HALF hat-trick of goals from Derry captain Kevin Hinphey saw Kevin Lynch's reclaim the Derry Senior Hurling Championship from Lavey at Celtic Park last night.
With the Lynch’s defence dominant and Paddy Kelly and Mark Craig lording it at midfield the Dungiven men’s forward line feasted on quality early ball. Though Paddy Henry’s early free saw Lavey open the scoring it was one-way traffic for the next 15 minutes by which stage Hinphey had already found the net twice, augmented by another goal from Niall Ferris to lead by 3-4 to 0-1.
Lavey hit their first score from play, by Cailean O’Boyle, on 22 minutes but the respite was short-lived and by the interval Hinphey had grabbed a third goal as Kevin Lynch’s led by 4-7 to 0-4.
Any chances of a Lavey fightback were killed off within four minutes of the restart as Kevin O’Neill was sent off for a second yellow card, a blow that was compounded when Paul Sweeney pulled on a ground ball for a fifth Lynch’s goal.
After that the steam went out of the game. Lavey did land a goal six minutes from time but Paddy Henry had a late penalty saved.
