Lindsay Davenport beat world number one Martina Hingis to take the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, regaining the title she won in 1998.

Davenport used her powerful strokes from the outset and fired 14 aces to help her to a 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 6-2 victory over Hingis, who was aiming to take the event for a record fourth time. Davenport stretched her win-loss record against Hingis to 13-10 in major tournaments.

Switzerland's Roger Federer yesterday proved he too can win at the top level by beating unseeded Frenchman Julien Boutter 6-4, 6-7 (7/9), 6-4 to win the Milan Indoors tournament.
