The young Irish side looked set for a famous victory after Old Belvedere outhalf Brian Collins’ 67th minute penalty put them two points point clear.
A first half try from Athlone’s Paul Harte and Collins’ consequent conversion had the home side 7-3 ahead after Pointer’s early penalty before a Drew Locke try set up Pointer to break home hearts.
