High School's half-back pairing of Shane Murphy and Gary Black hardly put a foot wrong while contributing all their team's 16 points against Wesley at Kilternan. They proved to be the key players in a tightly-fought contest. Their opposite numbers, Craig Sowman and David Popplewell, were also to the fore but luck generally went High School's way.

High School took the lead with a well-struck penalty by Black but this was quickly answered by a Wesley surge which ended with a finely taken try by lock forward Stuart Abbott, converted by Sowman. High School's half-backs were crucial to their first try when Murphy blocked an attempted clearance and found Black at his side in a scramble for the line, giving Murphy the touchdown. It was 8-7 at half-time.

Black landed a penalty early in the second half before Wesley winger Ross Jackson scored an admirable try, following a cleverly worked blindside move which was started by number eight Hugh Hogan. Sowman added the conversion. With the score at 14-11 in Wesley's favour, the next 10 minutes were fought with intensity, but Murphy once again produced the goods for High School with the winning opportunistic try.
