The Commonwealth Games

The Commonwealth Games. Was anyone really watching? South Africa's Hester Bekker, 57, and 13-year-old Canadian Alexandre Despatie both obviously relished their chances in humid Kuala Lumpur.

Lawn bowler Bekker, the oldest gold medallist at the games, won back-to-back titles in the women's fours and Despatie also dived into the record books. At 13 years and three months he was the youngest gold medal winner in the history of the Commonwealth Games.

Bekker took South Africa to a 17-16 win over Australia in the women's fours for her second Commonwealth title, while Despatie, a Quebec teenager who is actually too young to take part in the World Championships or Olympics, completely stole the show in the platform event. What can you say but that the age difference makes Bekker old enough to be Despatie's grandmother!
