Gorey snatch victory

Gorey CS left it late before clinching a remarkable win over Marian College in this Leinster Schools' Junior Cup Section A quarter-final at Dr Hickey Park, Greystones, yesterday. They were four points in arrears going into the last minute of normal playing time, but then snatched victory when winger Denis Tompkins burst through the Marian defence before sending full-back John Shortall over in the corner for the clinching score.

Marian used the wind advantage to good effect in the first half, building up a 13-0 lead. Their impressive centre, Ciaran Connolly, powered over for their first try after five minutes. Skipper Alan Murphy crept over for a second try on 15 minutes and Connolly then landed a penalty shortly before the interval.

However, Gorey out-half, Lyndon Jones, reduced the deficit with three penalties before that exciting finish.
