Jon Rahm held off rookie Davis Thompson to win his second PGA Tour title this year at The American Express in California.
The Spaniard will move up one spot in the world rankings to number three after he closed with a four-under 68 to win by one stroke on Sunday at La Quinta.
Rahm and 23-year-old Thompson were tied with three holes to play when Thompson, who led through 36 holes and shared the lead with Rahm going into Sunday, pulled his drive into a deep fairway bunker on the par-five 16th and wound up with par. Rahm made birdie to take the lead.
On the par-3 17th, the American chose to leave the pin in for his 50-foot birdie putt on the island green, and the ball squarely hit the pin and rolled away.

LPGA Tour
With a two-under-par 70 in the final round, Brooke Henderson completed a wire-to-wire victory at the LPGA’s season-opening Tournament of Champions on Sunday in Orlando.
The 25-year-old Canadian was the solo leader after each round, owning a four-shot edge after just two rounds and cruising to the finish line at 16-under 272 at Lake Nona Golf & Country Club.
It marks her third career wire-to-wire win and her 13th LPGA title. She placed second at this event last season.
Henderson finished four strokes better than Sweden’s Maja Stark and England’s Charley Hull, each of whom shot a final-round 69 to tie for second at 12 under.
Leona Maguire finished in a tie for 9th place at 6 under. The Irish woman started her round strongly with four birdies in her first seven holes. Two drop shots followed at 10 and 12 before another birdie at 13 gave her a round of 69. Maguire won $41,239 for her efforts.
