Eamon Giles will be at Croke Park next Sunday to cheer on his son Trevor Giles, the captain of the Meath team, against Kerry in the All-Ireland semi-finals.
Last week however, Giles senior was king of the green sward at Royal Tara when he marched to victory in Michael Goggins' captain's prize. While the elements contrived to mar the weekend, with frequent heavy showers, there was no stopping Giles, who off a 10 handicap amassed 41 points to win by one point from Michael J Moran and Paddy Ward on 40.
The abundance of rain did not hamper good scoring by leading qualifiers Gary O'Brien (4) and Joe Keating (19) with 41 and 42 points respectively. Jimmy Flynn took the gross with 34 points.
