The void left by Trevor Brennan would have proved a huge handicap to Leinster and their European Cup pretensions were it not for the performance of Declan O'Brien (above). The DLSP blindside flanker has produced a series of excellent performances for the province. A tremendous work ethic, coupled with aggressive tackling and improved ball-handling has made him a standout performer.

The Enniscorthy-born player, who now lives in Kilternan - having spent time at Clontarf - is playing the best rugby of his career. Leinster coach Mike Ruddock has singled him out for special praise, not only for high-profile work but for the consistency he has achieved from match to match.

His is another in an expanding cast of back-row aspirants that should be considered when national squads are being compiled.
