FLANKER Barry O’Mahony scored a hat-trick of tries to help Garryowen beat Old Belvedere 34-15 at Dooradoyle and go second in the Ulster Bank League Division One A table.
Garryowen picked up a bonus point with Conan Doyle getting a fourth try. Jamie Gavin was responsible for the remainder of the points with four conversions and two penalties. The win leaves the Limerick outfit just a point behind leaders Lansdowne.
Young Munster drop to third following a late 21-20 defeat by Cork Constitution at Temple Hill. Con snatched victory in injury time when Johnny Holland converted Ivan Dineen’s try, his second of the match, from near the touchline.
Earlier, Brian Haugh had kicked his fifth penalty of the game to give Young Munster the advantage going into the closing stages.
Dolphin go fourth after beating bottom of the table Shannon 31-13 at Coonagh. Brendan Keeshan was in excellent form with the boot, landing three penalties, a drop goal and two conversions.
Rob O’Herlihy and Christy Condon crossed for tries, while there was also a penalty try. Shannon have now conceded 115 points in losing their three games.
The prolific Malone team head Division One B after trouncing Bruff 46-3 at Gibson Park. They scored six tries as they overwhelmed the Limerick opposition.
Dublin University move into second spot after defeating Ballymena 25-11 at College Park. They have won their opening three games, as have Ballynahinch who recorded a fine 24-13 win over the previously unbeaten UCD side at Belfield.
Elsewhere, Dungannon and Belfast Harlequins managed first victories. Dungannon defeated Buccaneers 26-12 away, while Belfast Harlequins got the better of Blackrock College 27-19 at home.
Blackrock are struggling badly since their relegation from Division One A and lie at the bottom of the table alongside Ballymena.
