ROSCOMMON footballers' straight run of victories came to an abrupt end at Hyde Park yesterday with this crushing defeat at the hands of their neighbours, Galway.

From the start, the leaders of the division were totally outclassed by a rampant Galway side who were first to every ball and recorded all but two points of their total from play.

A goal after nine minutes from their outstanding full forward, John Donnellan, put Galway in command and further points from Michael Donnellan, Conor McGauran, Declan Meehan Niall Finnegan and Sean Og de Paor - to which Roscommon could only reply with a pointed free from Eddie Lohan - gave them a 1-7 to 0-1 cushion at the break.

Roscommon brought Damian Donlon into their attack and made a number of positional changes for the second half, but there was simply no stopping Galway.

The home side did not register a score from play until substitute Donlon pointed 12 minutes into the second half. However, Galway had a string of points, from Meehan, Michael Donnellan and Tomas Mannion.

Galway goalkeeper Pat Comer brought off a number of saves before Eddie Lohan finally found a way past him; but the goal, 10 minutes from time, came too late for Roscommon.
