Galway United1 Dundalk 0:ON THE eve of the league season interest was wavering around Terryland Park, but then Galway United went to Inchicore and thumped St Patrick's Athletic. Suddenly the domestic game mattered again in the west.
That is why a curious audience gathered on the Dyke Road last night to see how Galway would cope with Dundalk.
After being so crafty against St Patrick’s, Galway weren’t able to replicate such style, and were reasonably satisfied to go in at the break on level terms.
It was similarly tight following the restart, but Galway nearly nicked a 54th-minute goal when Vinny Faherty’s looping header hit the crossbar.
Galway were now in the ascendancy, and Simon Kelly was dismissed for Dundalk in the 73rd minute following a challenge on Derek O’Brien, and then the locals hit the winner on 82 minutes when Gary Breen bundled Jay O’Shea’s free-kick past Chris Bennion.
