Galway in crisis over selectors

THE Galway Hurling Board executive met the remaining two hurling selectors, Mattie Murphy and Jarlath Cloonan, last night in a further attempt to resolve a crisis over the appointment of a third selector. The full Hurling Board will meet tomorrow night and it is hoped that a third selector, acceptable to the board, could be ratified.

The problem follows the resignation as a selector of former All Ireland hurler Frank Burke several weeks ago. Efforts to replace him have failed, including a meeting of the board earlier this week.

At that meeting, which was held in camera, a motion of no confidence in the team manager and selector, Mattie Murphy, was proposed and seconded. The motion wasn't put to the meeting, however, on the advice of a number of influential members who expressed the hope that a solution to the problem could be found without taking a potentially divisive vote.
