SOCCER:JUNIOR CLUB Sheriff YC manager Paul Usher expressed his delight at drawing First Division side Shelbourne in the FAI Ford Cup, reports PAUL BUTTNER.
The AUL (Athletic Union League) champions, the only non-league side left in the competition, caused one of the shocks of the third round when beating First Division Salthill Devon. “I’m very pleased,” said Usher. “It was my preference to be honest with you. It’s a local derby. It will be great for the area.”
Wexford Youths caused the other upset of the last round when trouncing Derry City 4-1 at Ferrycarrig Park. They’re also pleased with getting a home draw against fellow First Division side Cork City. “This is a nice draw for us, the home draw is great,” said Wexford manager Noel O’Connor.
Holders Sligo Rovers have received another home draw against the side they beat in last year’s EA Sports Cup final, Monaghan United.
Having just lost 6-1 to them last Friday, UCD may not have been too happy to draw Shamrock Rovers away in a repeat of the 1984 final.
FAI Cup, Fourth round draw: Shamrock Rovers v UCD; Waterford Utd v St Patrick’s Athletic; Bray Wanderers v Limerick FC; Longford Town v Bohemians; Wexford Youths v Cork City; Sligo Rovers v Monaghan Utd; Sheriff YC v Shelbourne; Drogheda Utd v Dundalk.
