The future certainly looks bright for the members of Nenagh Golf Club. At an Extraordinary General Meeting last week the members voted in favour of a substantial redevelopment of the course. The new design will lengthen the course by almost 2,000 yards from the back stakes with a par of 72 which will include two par fives and two par threes on each nine.
Set in its current 90 acres of beautiful parkland, Nenagh was founded in 1929 when a nine-hole course was laid out at Beechwood. It was extended to its present 18 holes in 1973 by the late Eddie Hackett. The course has achieved widespread recognition for its ability to cope with the most adverse weather conditions.
Well known designer Patrick Merrigan, who has worked on the Slieve Russell, the Old Head of Kinsale, Faithlegg, Woodenbridge and Harbour Point to name just a few, had his development proposal accepted by the membership last week and work will commence in April at a cost of £700,000.
