After only two games on debut at Valderrama, played full role and partnered close friend Westwood to two wins and two defeats. Grew in stature in first day fourball victory over Woods and Duval, the world's top two, but found Hal Sutton too hot to handle in singles.

Controversial wild card choice by Mark James. One of three rookies who did not get a game until the singles - and then faced Woods. Held his own for six holes, but lost the next three and went down three and two without winning a single hole.

Youngest player ever in Cup took to it as if to manor born. Enthusiasm and joy spread through team like wildfire. Partnered Parnevik to three wins and a half, but could not add the icing to the cake, losing to Jim Furyk.

Called in to replace Olazabal as Jimenez's partner in foursomes and deserved more than half-a-point from their two games. Fought his heart out for what looked at the time a key win over Mark O'Meara.

Really rose to the challenge, first with Harrington in foursomes and then with off-form Olazabal in fourballs. Removed all question marks about how he would handle the pressure. Steve Pate got the better of him in singles, though.

British Open champion was chosen by Montgomerie as his partner and responded brilliantly. They set tone on first morning and Lawrie will long remember tee shot to 18 inches at 16th in second day fourballs win over Woods and Pate. Given anchor role in singles and beat Jeff Maggert.

Rock of the European side. Took on senior role in absence of Faldo, Langer, Woosnam, and Ballesteros and did not buckle, even when crowd got at him. A week after cursing his putting, was brilliant on greens and nursed Lawrie through debut. Remains unbeaten in singles after win over Payne Stewart.

Asked to be left out of foursomes because of poor driving, but helped inspire Jimenez to one win and one half in fourballs. Remained unbeaten during week, but from four up with seven to play lost five of next six holes to Justin Leonard and with that the Cup changed hands.

Jesper Parnevik

The perfect partner for Garcia. Relaxed attitude and brilliant golf. The pair wanted to play together, James gave them their wish and it paid handsome rewards. On his own, though, Parnevik was crushed by David Duval as he was by O'Meara on 1997 debut.

Eccentric Swede sat out first two days as James went for America's jugular, then made debut against Mickelson, with whom he had controversial match at 1996 Dunhill Cup. Only one down at turn, but then dropped four shots in next three holes.

Everybody wanted to see how first Frenchman in Ryder Cup would cope after tossing away three-shot lead on final hole in Open. Only chance to see came in singles - and it lasted only 13 holes as Davis Love crushed him with superb display.

Two wins out of four with Clarke was perhaps slightly disappointing return, but they did beat Woods and Duval. Sent out first in singles and could not give Europe the lead they wanted, losing to Tom Lehman.
