Re-fixed for late March after their February meeting was abandoned at half-time due to fog, Mayo turned in a superb performance, winning both halves.

They led 0-13 to 0-5 at half-time and while Dublin improved in the second half, Mayo still outscored them by 0-7 to 0-3 in the second half to inflict a thoroughly convincing defeat on the All-Ireland champions.

A third win in succession put Dublin on top of Division One, although there were lucky to take full points on this occasion, as Mayo hit 18 wides and sent many other chances either short or simply astray.

Then Mayo manager John O’Mahony didn’t disguise his disappointment afterwards, especially as Mayo enjoyed the far greater percentage of possession: indeed Dublin didn’t score for 16 minutes of the second half, before the introduction of Bernard Brogan and Conal Keaney finally got their scoring back in the right grove, and enough to see Dublin take the narrow win.

“If we defend like that in the summer, we won’t be mapped,” said Dublin manager Pat Gilroy afterwards, and fortunately for them things did tighten up considerably.

But in this veritable goal fest, Mayo came from 14 points down after 23 minutes to being level after 45 minutes, but three goals from Diarmuid Connolly – in the 16th, 18th and 23rd minute, for a personal tally of 3-3 – was enough to see Dublin take the points in the end.
