BRINGING the Sam Maguire Cup home does not necessarily mark the end of a year's work. Meath captain Tommy Dowd had reason yesterday to rue the protracted nature of the season as he tried to make up his mind on who he will play for next Sunday.
He must choose between the All-Ireland champions, who play in the first round of the National League against Cavan, and the Dunderry hurling team that needs him so desperately.
Given Dowd's value as a player in both codes, it represents a classic example of a player being torn between club and county. Meath manager Sean Boylan, who picks his team this evening, was yesterday awaiting not only Dowd's decision but also that of mid-fielder Jimmy McGuinness, who is due to line out in the hurling championship match with Kilmessan.
The starting time of the games, 12.30 for the hurling in Trim and 3.30 for the football in Navan, presents both players with the opportunity of playing in both games. More than likely, however, this would not be acceptable to the football selectors.
Boylan guided his team to four wins before Christmas in last year's league campaign and his immediate aim is to repeat the feat. However, injuries, club commitments and possible suspensions will seriously put Meath's reserve strength to the test over the next few weeks.
Brendan Reilly is still troubled with the foot injury that forced him to hobble out of the All-Ireland replay after notching the winning point. Barry Callaghan has aggravated the groin injury he carried into the All-Ireland.
Evan Kelly is club tied with Drumree in the junior championship match that precedes the League match in Navan. Also out are Stephen O'Rourke (injured) and Cathal Sheridan who is getting married this week.
Ronan Finnegan and Jody Devine are still involved in the Meath county championship. Their respective clubs, Kilmainhamwood and Ballinlough, are in the quarter-finals.
