Nick Doran stormed through the field on the final day to record a notable double as the 72-hole Carlsberg West Coast Challenge wound up its 15th season over the Bundoran, Strandhill, Enniscrone and Donegal courses last week.
Doran, from Aldersey Green on Merseyside, posted a closing 39 points from Bundoran to bring his four-round total to 151, and he also sailed home with the top team prize. A regular in the long-running competition, Doran combined with Leo Lennon-Maher (Dublin City) and Dom O'Brien (Royal Tara) to collect a superb 417 points over the four days.
The three players were individual entrants and put together in the "various" team category by organising secretary Liam McDevitt, a stroke of luck for the trio.
In the individual race, Doran was joint second going into the last round, two points behind former winner Matt Cronin from Thurles. However, it wasn't a good final day for Cronin who could only muster 32 points to drop out of contention.
Leading the team race was the Dublin-Wicklow combination of Shay Harte, Tony Sheridan and Tony Kelly but they also slipped back to give Doran double success.
Jay Stead, a newcomer to this international tournament, didn't fly back across the Atlantic empty-handed either. The seven-handicapper from Oakmount, California, carded a hole-in-one at the 170-yard 8th hole on the Enniscrone course on his way to posting 33 points.
