In recent years, a product known as a nasal dilator has become popular among professional and recreational athletes who believe that by improving their breathing, they will improve their performance. Even though it looks a little stupid, Liverpool's Robbie Fowler (left) and distance runner Paula Radcliffe are among the users of the product. A new study now suggests that the dilator, which resembles a piece of tape worn on the bridge of the nose, may not be particularly helpful. The article in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise was based on a study of 14 people ages 20 to 29.
Researchers asked the volunteers to pedal exercise bicycles, with and without the dilators, while their breathing was measured at different exertion levels. The researchers found very little difference when the dilators were used.
