ALESANDRO DEL PIERO fired home the only goal as European champions Juventus beat South American champions River Plate of Argentina 1-0 to win the Inter-Continental Cup in Tokyo yesterday.
The goal came in the 81st minute when Del Piero stabbed home from close range after Zinedine Zidane had headed on Angelo Di Livio's corner.
It is the second time the Italians have won the world club championship, following their first European Cup triumph in 1985. River Plate won the Inter-Continental Cup in 1986.
Meanwhile, Jorge Costa, the captain of FC Porto, is to lodge an official complaint with the Portuguese police for assault against George Weah. Costa has also sent medical reports to UEFA regarding the broken nose he sustained after Weah allegedly head-butted him after their Champions' League game last Wednesday.
Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani hinted last week that Milan's case would be based on retaliation. "We will present our version of events," he said. "Without accusing anyone. I'd make the point that certain things, like spit, are less obvious than blood."
