Given that he designed the famous West Course, where the Volvo PGA Championship is currently in progress, it seems ironic that an event at Wentworth should have caused the postponment of an overdue honour to Harry S Colt. But that's the reason the global launch of the Colt Association, set for the Stoke Park Club in Buckinghamshire last Tuesday, was deferred.
Now, a development, which will be of interest to a select group of Irish clubs, is planned for July. The celebrated English golf architect had an imput into the design of more than 300 courses world-wide, while more than 100 layouts are exclusively his own work.
Among these are Royal Dublin, Clontarf, Dun Laoghaire, Greystones, Royal Portrush, Co Sligo, Belvoir Park, Knock, Royal Belfast, Cairndhu and Foxrock. Associate Alister MacKenzie was involved with Lahinch and Cork. "We will be writing to all these clubs, informing them of our plans," said Ralph Pickering, secretary of the Colt Committee, which also includes television commentators Peter Alliss and Bruce Critchley.
The idea is to establish a bond between all the Colt clubs, leading to an exchange of information and possible golfing activities, as with the MacKenzie Society. Meanwhile, the annual Colt Cup will take place at Stroke Park (formerly Stoke Poges) next month - on a 1908 Colt course, naturally.
