Clarkes on course

Michael Clarke kept the family name to the fore at Howth golf club last week

Michael Clarke kept the family name to the fore at Howth golf club last week. Clarke, whose wife Florrie is Lady Captain, won the Captain's (Pierce Redmond) Prize with an excellent score of 64. He finished three shots clear of his nearest challenger, Finan Grimes and two ahead of Dermot Twomey in third place. Clarke had earlier in the week set out his marker when, playing off a handicap of 17, he shot a remarkable 47 points to win the Seniors Open.

Also making the headlines at Howth is former Dublin Gaelic football star, Simon Behan, winner of an All-Ireland medal in 1963. He won the June Medal with a score of 61. Behan was, so to speak, keeping it in the company - the medal was sponsored by Texaco and he is public relations manager with the company.

Adding to the excitement of the week at Howth was 13-year-old Philip Hyland, who showed his more illustrious members how to play the tricky par three fourth hole by holing out his tee shot.
