After the two successive surprise midweek results in which Glenanne and Monkstown were held to 2-2 draws by Avoca and Aer Lingus, respectively, the chase for the top three places in the Leinster Senior League takes on a fresh intensity.
Leaders Glenanne have gone to the trouble of engaging in a practice session on the new Grange Road surface so as to be fully prepared for the bounce of the ball against Three Rock Rovers tomorrow. Both clubs are also involved in the Irish Junior Cup semi-finals but Glenanne II, who have Keith Fishbourne available to mark Kenny Morris in the away assignment against Annadale II, do not depend as much on senior squad resources as Rovers II, who are at home to youthful Bandon.
This may be to Glenanne's advantage in the league match, though if Liam Canning were to appear for Three Rock, he might hold sufficient possession to improve on the side's recent performances. Furthermore, Shane Davey may well cope with Stephen Butler's set-piece strikes, perhaps reducing the visitors' winning margin to a goal.
Pembroke should stay in touch by beating YMCA at Ballinteer but the gap is bound to be much closer compared to the 6-0 scoreline at Serpentine Avenue in November.
Monkstown, after surrendering the initiative to Railway Union in the Mills Cup semi-final on Sunday, will not be relishing a meeting with the same opposition at Park Avenue tomorrow. At least, they will be more streetwise and determined to shake off Wednesday's frustration at ALSAA. Here, their rivals for third spot, Corinthians, could also have difficulty in breaking down Aer Lingus. It's a testing weekend for Corinthians, who meet indoor specialists Avoca at Whitechurch Park on Sunday.
