Soccer News: Charlton last night agreed a £750,000 fee for Matt Holland after the Ipswich captain's personal demands were rejected by Portsmouth.
Charlton manager Alan Curbishley moved fast to register his interest in the Republic of Ireland midfielder, although he too has yet to agree terms with the player.
"(Holland's) transfer to Portsmouth appeared to be in jeopardy as a result of the player's personal terms," said a statement from Ipswich, who are desperate to cut Holland from their wage bill. "However, subsequent to this, the club reached an agreement of similar terms with Charlton."
Meanwhile, Albania have been awarded a 3-0 default win over the Republic of Ireland following last week's European under-21 Championship qualifier, UEFA announced yesterday.
Ireland, who won the Group 10 game 2-1 in Dublin on June 6th, were penalised for fielding a suspended player in the match.
The UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body ruled Ireland should not have played captain Liam Miller because he was suspended for repeated cautions. UEFA added that the FAI could lodge an appeal.
