Addressing the annual Offaly GAA Convention in Tullamore, the chairman, Brendan Ward, told delegates that 1998 has been a tremendous year for the county with the county capturing the McCarthy Cup for the fourth time. There was success also for the county footballers with the seniors recording a historic first victory in the NFL and the juniors reaching the All-Ireland final. On top of that, Birr won the All Ireland club hurling championship.

This year the accounts showed a healthy surplus of £34,685, compared with a mere £80 the previous year.
