Carlow emerged victorious from this meeting of two of Gaelic football's "weaker" counties, defeating the visitors Waterford by a massive 14point margin at Dr Cullen Park, Carlow yesterday afternoon.

Carlow's centre forward Willie Quinlan did massive damage to the Waterford defence. He scored a total of three goals and two points from play and his incisive runs created many other scores for his colleagues.

Quinlan had an able deputy in Mark Carpenter, from Leinster club champions O'Hanrahan's.

Carpenter scored an outstanding first goal for Carlow in the 19th minute following a four-man move in which Quinlan was centrally involved. Four minutes later and Carpenter was the provider as Quinlan boxed home the first of his hat-trick of goals.

Waterford's midfielder Karl O'Keeffe replied with a brilliant solo-effort goal, but, by half-time, a third goal for Carlow, this time from Brian Kenny had put the home side into a very comfortable 36 to 1-3 lead.

The second half was a formality for the home county and was highlighted by Quinlan's two further goals.

This was Carlow's second victory in Division Two B while Waterford remain anchored at the bottom, without a single point.
