Limerick IT 1-20 GMIT 0-8:AN INJURY to Joe Canning overshadowed this big win by LIT yesterday. By the time of his departure midway through the second half Canning had dominated the game, scoring 1-8.
LIT made a perfect start against the strong breeze and had the opening four points, before GMIT cut the deficit to two points after 20 minutes, 0-6 to 0-4.
But Canning’s goal after 22 minutes changed the game dramatically. It came after he had shipped a heavy knock on the edge of the square which earned a yellow card for Conor Forde. After receiving attention, Canning stepped up and blasted the free to the net.
LIT went on to lead 1-9 to 0-5 at half-time and, on the resumption, they landed five points on the trot from Canning, four frees and a 65.
By that early stage it was as good as over and GMIT managed only two points from play in a one-sided last quarter.
Canning was taken to St John’s Hospital in Limerick for an X-ray to his collar bone and LIT and Galway are anxiously awaiting confirmation of the reports that he has dislocated his shoulder, which would put him out of action for at least a month.
