Wexford substitute Billy Byrne must be doubtful for his side's All-Ireland Senior Hurling semi-final clash with Tipperary on August 17th. Byrne, who scored a dramatic 1-2 when introduced as a substitute in the Leinster final victory over Kilkenny eight minutes from the end, was carried from the field with a bad ankle injury in a club intermediate hurling championship game yesterday. Byrne, who had contributed 2-4 as his side Naomh Eanna (Gorey) suffered a 0-15 to 2-8 loss to St Anne's was stretchered from the field one minute from the end after scoring a dramatic late goal.
Team mentors immediately applied ice packs to the injury but Byrne was in considerable discomfort in the dressing room following the game and is none too confident of making the Tipperary game.
According to Billy, the ankle is badly swollen and he will be having X-rays to discover the extent of the injury today.
